Mrs. Barb Adams - School Nurse
Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring
without even a prescription. ~Val Saintsbury

Welcome to the Bell School Health Office. The school nurse is in attendance from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. during the school year. You may contact her then at 775-1778 for questions regarding medications in school, illness, or when to keep your child home. For physical exams or attendance see information below.
Medication at School
The Windsor Central School District will assist in the administration of medication prescribed by a private physician if the frequency of dosage demands that it be given during the hours when the pupil is in school. Therefore, if it is necessary for your child to receive medication during school hours, this procedure must be observed.
1.) A written request from the physician directing that medication should be administered in the following form:
b.) Dosage and frequency
c.) Adverse, or suspected reactions
2.) A written request from the parent stating that medication should be administered to their child as requested by their physician.
3.) Any medication to be administered by the school nurse should be delivered to the Health Office (in its original bottle ) by the parent.
Communicable Diseases
Communicable diseases affect the entire community. Immunization is the best method of control against many communicable diseases. Immunization clinics are sponsored by the Broome County Health Department.
Early discovery is the first step in control of communicable disease. Parents are urged to keep sick children home, call the family physician, and notify the school health office of the illness.
Please do not send your child to school when he or she has any of the following:
-
Fever - should be normal 24 hours following an illness before returning to school
-
Rash - or any skin lesion, until diagnosed by your doctor as non-communicable
-
Vomiting or Diarrhea
-
Earache
-
Sore Throat
Your cooperation in following with these rules not only helps your child to heal, but also prevents the spreading to other children in the class, including infection of the teachers and other school staff.
Physical Examination
According to the State Education Law, children in Pre-K or Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grades must have physical examinations.
When possible, parents are encouraged to have physicals done by their family physician to insure complete evaluation and care. School physicals will be provided during the school year by the Nurse Practitioner.
Physical Education
Physical education is an important part of the school program as required by law. We strive to offer an interesting and beneficial program for all grades. When it is absolutely necessary a child may be excused from gym upon a written request from the parent for two periods. Beyond this a written statement from a doctor is required with a statement of limitations.
Emergency Information
Each child is given an emergency information card to be completed by his or her parents or guardians and returned to the school. It is important for the school nurse to have this information to be able to contact parent/guardian if the need should arise. If a child needs to go home due to illness the parents/guardians will be notified. Transportation is the responsibility of the parents.
Attendance
Regular attendance at school and being on time for classes is a habit which should be established early.
The Educational Law of New York State considers the following reasons as being legal absences from school:
- sickness
- death in family
- impassable roads
- quarantine
- religious observance
- attendance at an organized clinic
Please notify the school by telephone if your child is absent. On returning to school after an absence or tardiness, all children must bring a signed note from the parent/guardian stating the reason.
When the parent wishes to have a child excused from class for a remedial health reason (doctor or dentist appointment), or for any other reason, a written request signed by the parent must be presented before the child may leave the building.
